Artist Statement
Since retiring from practicing law in 2010, my major painting output has been “botanical art” using traditional methods. However, ever since Design School in the 1970’s I have been intrigued with reverse painting with acrylic paint on Plexiglas. Something about the color intensity and the smooth continuous surface attracts me. Acrylic paint sticks to Acrylic panel (Plexiglas) very well. I still have one I made more than 50 years ago to prove it. I also like the fact that when I sign reverse paintings my signature appears backwards. Somehow this seems appropriate to the “ Magic Realism” style of my recent work. My latest experiment is to paint in both sides of the plexiglas panel.
I have been making photographs since I was 13 and I often use photography in the service of my botanical art. I include several photographs for their own sake as well as to demonstrate their relationship to my painting and drawing.
